"Sydney band EBOLIE have been
making audiences giggle, swill beer and get whiplash with their fun grindcore
over the past few years, and are about to put out a full length CD on Grindhead
Records, which is Bubsy from Ebolie's label.
This disc has two songs from that,
and three bonus tracks, one of which was recorded on a Playstation by drummer
Gene.
EBOLIE are good, in that the first impression you get of them, either seeing
their CD cover (a picture of a girl, naked, with a rifle inside her...) or
meeting them (they're hyperactive funny yob cunts) is of a goregrind band.
But then you put on the opening
track, "Foetal Grindings" whose 40 second intro has mellow jazz drums opening a
blanket of shiny guitaring and drums warming up with subtle china hits and
swigning along the whole time. The explosion hits with relentless blastbeating,
guttural dischordant grind with groovy breakdowns with a general funk and
hardcore vocal. The stop-starting blasts make for excellent bridges into the
sludgy moments where evil reigns supreme. Bubsy's vocals have gotten more brutal
and can hit a lot of different notes, and the drumming is exceptionally fast.
The twists and turns eventuate into a glitcy breakbeat scape with tribal Indian
sounding singing for eight seconds. An epic, manic idea of where EBOLIE are
heading with this album.
"Worked Forced" is the other track
off the LP, and it's guitaring intro is very cold but huge in a black metal way,
building up into a more muted thrash metal crossover grindcore with hyper short
blasts working tight with the muddy, funky bass. A MR.BUNGLE sounding circus
sample makes for an introduction into a tech-metal sounding part. The Mr.Bungle
of Australian grindcore?
"Reinventing the Wizard Driven"
is, I'm pretty sure, a pisstake of black metal, patch wearing cunts. It has a
very fast, blasting drum machine and "you think you're wizard driven just
because you wear a cape" opens up the thrashing, hilarious number. Bubsy sounds
like he's being raped by satan and his eyes are being pecked out by a scarecrow.
A charming number breaking the minute barrier.
"Zombie Cunts" is a very dark,
deathmetal sounding track with heaps lowend vocals and guitar. 39 seconds.
The surprising track on this is
"The Return to Chaos" a hardcore techno number. It's at about the right speed
for good, driving hardcore, and it's sample, 'it'll take time to distort chaos'
is good if a bit repetitive. Builds up well, and has a gabber-esque melodic
line, and has some nice sounds in there.
Secret track is a 3 second sample
of a man shitting profusely." -Screaming
