Reviews
The closest band to Mortician that doesn’t use a drum machine, Cinerary spew
forth accelerated blastbeats, waves of bludgeoning riffage, and completely — and
I mean completely — unintelligible vocal growls. Ex-Disgorge frontman Matti Way
swallows the mic like a cross between Mortician’s Will Rahmer and Internal
Bleeding’s Wallace Milton with a generous dollop of old Gonkulator for that
drain-emptying gurgle. Denser than the speediest Cannibal Corpse, Rituals Of
Desecration is six cuts (seven if you count the hidden track with the humorous
falsetto) of extreme underground death metal that covers such lyrical topics
as…well, let’s just say that Cinerary’s parents probably don’t discuss their
content at social functions. “Undying” starts out with a whispered intro that is
immediately reminiscent of Butthole Surfer Gibby Haynes’ intro to Ministry’s
“Jesus Built My Hotrod”; after that, the song bleeds into the other five tunes,
swirling together in a garbled mass of deathvomit. It’s the type of death metal
that my friends imitate on the fly to make fun of my musical tastes, and after
the CD is over, all I remember are the songs’ abrupt, Mortician-like endings…oh,
and the Jack Nicholson diatribe from The Shining that prefaces the title track.
Though it’s not necessarily my cup of tea, Cinerary should be strongly
recommended to those sicker death fans who already have all the 2003 deathfests
marked on their calendars alongside new album release dates for Gorelord and
Wurdulak. -Digital
