The Dead End

I can certainly say that the title says it all, this is excellent death metal indeed. Four well written tracks are on offer here, each providing good variety. Listening to this, I can't help but be transported a few years back to the days of such bands as Deranged, Dying Fetus, Malevolent Creation etc. Syphilis have drawn on many influences to create a great mix of death, grind and traditional metal. There are intense sections with grinding riffs that change pace throughout and double kicks from hell from the drummer who handles some awesome blast beats and provides non stop fills. The guitars have no problem keeping up and we are treated to some terrific lead work and soloing. The vocals are of a death/gore style and are deep and throaty. Mixed in are sections of wicked groove reminding me of Bloodduster and Pungent Stench and some slower gentle guitar work to ease the pain. The cover artwork is a highlight as are the song titles, unfortunately no lyrics to give us an insight into these four wholesome young lads.

Primal Agony Zine

Not actually available to the public this 4 track promo is more of just a way to let people know what to expect when their debut album comes out later in the year. Check the name of the band and the title of the promo and it is pretty clear what to expect. Mixing death/grind and gore Syphilis will sit nicely beside many other great Aussie bands in this style. There is no breakthrough of the musical evolution with these songs but there is no doubting the ability of these guys to do what they do extremely well. It also looks like they might have a sense of humour when it comes to the lyrics with song titles like "Pervert On The Roof" and "Mental About Your Fatness" to name a couple. Yet another Aussie band release that maybe worth keeping an eye out for soon.
